Advanced Learning Institute and Simulation Center

For HHC, patient safety is its highest priority. From housekeepers to trauma surgeons, HHC hospitals and clinics have embarked on a multi-year campaign to increase safety for patients and promote a fair, just and open culture of learning, prevention and accountability. HHC is setting aggressive, measurable goals to reduce such preventable events as hospital-acquired infection, untreated early stage cardiac failure and medication errors. HHC leadership is building a solid infrastructure to support a robust patient safety program that includes every facility. HHC’s ultimate goal is to become one of the safest healthcare systems in the nation by the year 2010. From the implementation of best clinical practices to our pioneering website HHC In Focus: Understanding our Quality and Safety Performance which publicly lists HHC performance data related to quality and patient safety, we are well on our way to making that goal a reality with quality indicators showing consistent prevention of central line infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia and surgical infections.
As part of HHC’s commitment to patient safety, HHC proposes to establish and maintain an on-going learning institute that will assure the competencies and best practices of clinical and professional staff, including nurses, physicians, residents, pharmacists, technicians and ultimately all staff. HHC’s Advanced Learning Institute will draw from databases including risk management, malpractice and other Quality and Assurance indicators.
The Institute will comprise three critical components:
- Experiential. Hands-on replication of real work hospital activities and may include role playing, determining diagnoses etc.
- Didactic. Formalized lectures and in-classroom activities.
- Simulation vs. Virtual Reality. Virtual labs in which 30-40 people are doing the same tasks at the same time.
