Grant Announcement
HHC Awarded a Grant by the New Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence to Create a Leadership Academy for Nurse Leaders

New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) was recently awarded a grant from the recently launched Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence.  Funds from the grant will be used to create an HHC Leadership Academy for Nurse Leaders in collaboration with Adelphi University, Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, Pace University Leinhard School of Nursing, New York University School of Nursing, and Lehman College School of Nursing, CUNY.

One of the most significant challenges facing HHC and other hospitals and healthcare providers today is a severe nursing shortage.  A 2005 report released by the United States Department of Health and Human Services projects that without measures taken to address the issue, the current U.S. vacancy rate of 7 percent for nurses will increase to 29% by the year 2020.

The Leadership Academy will synergize with HHC’s Corporate Nursing Strategic Plan to combat the growing nursing shortage and enhance the nursing profession.  An essential element of the Plan is to assure succession planning and advance nursing leadership. HHC recognizes the value in providing education, forums for leadership development, coaching, and mentorship to advance the professional development of new nursing leaders as well as to enhance the skills of current leaders.

The Jonas Center’s competitive grant process for Who Will Care for Me? Strengthening Nurse Recruitment, Retention and Practice in New York City began last fall and was facilitated by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
