LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (LEP)

Over 100 different languages are spoken at HHC facilities everyday. In recent years, the United States has become increasingly multilingual and diverse. Currently, there are almost 45 million people in the nation who speak a language other than English - that's over 17 percent of the nation's population.

By increasing the efficiency and quality of communication between doctors and healthcare workers with their patients and families, language barriers can be overcome.

Support will enhance culturally appropriate care, and language
access services provided by HHC such as:

  • Culturally appropriate pictorial aides
  • Healthy Communitpy Access Programs
  • LEP network coordinators
  • Signage
  • Translation of written material
  • Developing interpreter capacity
  • Training in cultural competency and medical translation
