PEDIATRIC OBESITY

In the U.S., obesity in children has tripled over the past 25 years. Even with risks being well documented -- overweight children are at high risk for serious health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes, later in life -- the number of overweight children continues to rise. HHC is charged with protecting the City's most vulnerable populations and is committed to keeping children free of preventable disease through the promotion of health eating and lifestyle habits.

HHC's Pediatric Obesity Initiative:

  • Works with Child Health Clinics and Community Organizations to identify overweight children and children at risk for becoming overweight
  • Encourages children to participate in sports and other physical activities
  • Designs a diet modification and treatment plan for overweight children
  • Teaches children about making healthy food choices
  • Promotes a holistic approach that encourages whole family participation.
